Start with curiosity, not correction

Behavior is communication. A shutdown, outburst, or refusal may signal sensory overload, uncertainty, fatigue, or a need for predictability. Ask what the behavior is protecting your child from.

Create emotional safety

  • Use clear, concrete language
  • Offer predictable routines and warnings before transitions
  • Respect sensory needs and recovery time
  • Name emotions without demanding eye contact
  • Celebrate the child’s interests and authentic ways of connecting

Support the whole family

Parents deserve guidance too. Family therapy can help everyone communicate needs, reduce shame, and build routines that work for the actual child in front of you.
